BK Virus

Infection in Childhood

The BK virus is a type of polyomavirus that most people first become infected with during childhood. The initial infection is usually asymptomatic, and the virus can remain dormant in the cells of the kidneys or urinary tract for life. For individuals with a healthy immune system, the BK virus acquired in childhood typically does not cause any problems.

After Kidney Transplantation

The global incidence of kidney failure and transplants is rising. Kidney transplant patients receive immunosuppressive drugs to prevent organ rejection, which can lead to BKV nephropathy caused by the proliferation of the BK virus. However, in immunocompromised or immunosuppressed patients, the virus can reactivate due to weakened immunity.

Early Detection

BK viral DNA detection is usually time consuming, and although various techniques are developed to reduce the reaction time, Real time PCR and quantitative validation still require some time. Whereas, detecting BK virus using miRNA has high accuracy and sensitivity which allows to detect BK virus 1.5 to 2 month earlier than the viral DNA detection technology.
